The New Age Outlaws, with Road Dogg and Billy Gunn, won the World Tag Team Championship five times and the WWE Tag Team Championship once, anchoring D-Generation X where Road Dogg became the group’s de facto hypeman. James found additional success in singles competition, becoming a one-time Intercontinental Champion and one-time Hardcore Champion. The Road Dogg developed a unique relationship with crowds around the world, who sang along to every word he uttered. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame (Class of 2019) as part of D-Generation X.

In March 2026, WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg, who was serving as the co-head writer of SmackDown, parted ways with the promotion. The WWE Hall of Famer, who stepped down as co-head writer of SmackDown in March, opened up about his exit during an appearance on the Busted Open Podcast, framing his departure as a break from a company he felt had drifted away from what drew him to wrestling.
