About Sabu
One of the most influential hardcore wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots, Terry Brunk — better known as Sabu — carved his legend primarily in ECW during the 1990s, winning the ECW World Championship twice and accumulating a title résumé that also included the FTW Heavyweight Championship, three ECW World Tag Team reigns alongside Rob Van Dam, and the ECW Triple Crown. Sabu was the originator of a brand of crazy, high-risk aerial offense that reshaped professional wrestling, built on barbed wire matches, broken tables, and a reckless abandon that earned him the nickname “the Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Maniac.” He represented the ECW Originals alongside Van Dam, The Sandman, and Tommy Dreamer at WrestleMania 23, defeating The New Breed.
Just weeks before his death, Sabu competed in a retirement match during WrestleMania weekend in Las Vegas at GCW’s Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 — a No-Rope Barbed Wire Match against Joey Janela, which he won. He died on May 11, 2025, at the age of 60. A cause of death was not disclosed. WWE, AEW, and the broader wrestling world paid tribute, with Triple H calling him “the ECW original whose innovative style helped bring the entire wrestling world to a new extreme.”
