William Regal
About William Regal

One of professional wrestling’s purest technicians, Darren Matthews spent over four decades in the ring under the William Regal banner, forging a legacy built on catch-as-catch-can grappling, vicious European uppercuts, and the Regal Stretch submission. A four-time WCW Television Champion as Lord Steven Regal, he later captured the WWE Intercontinental, European, Hardcore, and Tag Team titles before winning the 2008 King of the Ring Tournament and serving as Raw General Manager that same year. His stewardship of NXT from 2014 to 2022 helped shape a generation of WWE talent.
After a 2022 stint in AEW managing the Blackpool Combat Club alongside Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson, Regal returned to WWE in January 2023 as Vice President of Global Talent Development. He made a surprise on-screen appearance at NXT in March 2026, and his son Charlie Dempsey remains active on the NXT roster, carrying on the family’s grappling tradition.
