SmackDown’s rolling into Boston tonight with the kind of card that doesn’t need much narrative scaffolding — three championship matches stacked on top of each other means someone’s walking out a new titleholder, and the TD Garden crowd will be ready to let everybody know exactly how they feel about it. The blue brand’s been humming along nicely, and tonight we find out if the momentum holds or if someone’s getting dethroned on home turf.
Baron Corbin vs. Carmelo Hayes — United States Championship
Corbin’s been a solid hand with the US strap, but Hayes has been building genuine steam as a credible threat. This is the kind of match where Hayes could legitimately take it — he’s got the star power and the in-ring chops to justify a title run. Watch for whether WWE’s actually ready to pull the trigger or if they’re keeping the belt on Corbin for another program.
WAW Pick: Corbin retains in a tight finish — Hayes gets a near-fall that makes the crowd think it’s happening, but the king of Boring doesn’t drop it tonight.
Jacy Jayne vs. Tiffany Stratton — Women’s United States Championship
Stratton’s been the face of the women’s midcard for a minute now. Jayne’s the challenger who needs to convince us she belongs in this spot. This is either a squash or a surprisingly competitive outing depending on what direction WWE’s taking the title picture.
WAW Pick: Stratton keeps it — she’s not losing this belt in August.
Damian Priest and R-Truth vs. [TBD] — Tag Team Championship
Priest and Truth as a team is one of those pairings that shouldn’t work on paper but does. The champs should be fairly heavily favored, but tag team wrestling is the one place WWE still lets the unpredictable happen.
WAW Pick: Priest and Truth retain — their partnership’s too fresh to blow up already.
Jacob Fatu shows up and creates chaos. Between the Oba Femu vs. Bron Breakker teasing and Fatu’s recent podcast run talking about his journey, he’s got every reason to insert himself into the SmackDown main event scene tonight. Don’t be shocked if he interrupts something and reminds everybody why he’s the most interesting physical specimen on the roster.
