Trish Stratus wins her seventh Women's Championship in her hometown Toronto
Twenty-one years ago, Trish Stratus stood in front of 17,000 people in Toronto and did something professional wrestling rarely allows its heroes to do β she won. Not just the match, not just a seventh Women’s Championship, but the whole argument. Every year of being underestimated, every title reign treated as an afterthought, every moment the women’s division was positioned as a bathroom break β Trish answered all of it in one night, in her city, on her terms.
What makes this moment hold up is that it wasn’t handed to her. Melina, by 2005, was credible enough opposition to make the stakes feel real rather than ceremonial, and that matters enormously when you’re building toward a retirement finish. The easiest booking failure would have been to make it feel inevitable from the opening bell β a victory lap rather than a match. The fact that it worked as both, as genuine competition and as emotional payoff, is a credit to both women and to how completely Trish had earned the crowd’s investment over the preceding years.
Retirement matches in wrestling are almost always lies β the business pulls people back, the moment gets revisited, the farewell gets complicated. Trish’s 2005 exit became the gold standard precisely because she didn’t cheapen it, and because winning the championship in that building, in front of that crowd, gave the ending the weight it deserved. It stands as a reminder that when professional wrestling lets someone leave on their own terms, it can produce something genuinely moving β proof that the medium is capable of real closure when it chooses to be.
