AEW WrestleDream delivers as a new tradition takes shape
Four years ago, AEW ran WrestleDream and delivered something the promotion had been quietly building toward all year: a show that felt like it meant something beyond the card in front of you. The event landed at a moment when AEW’s roster was carrying genuine main-event tension across multiple axes β Samoa Joe’s physicality, Wardlow’s bulldozing momentum, and the ever-present gravitational pull of whatever MJF was doing at any given moment. WrestleDream wasn’t just a good show in isolation; it was the kind of show that makes you believe a new calendar tradition might actually stick.
The Showbiz Joe moment β Samoa Joe leaning into a loose, almost contemptuous kind of charisma that complemented his established brutality β was the kind of thing that gets passed around in group chats and remembered years later. But it was MJF who cast the longest shadow over this period. His heel work throughout 2022 was genuinely among the finest character construction in wrestling in years, not because it was loud or overstated, but because it was disciplined β a man who understood exactly how much rope to give the crowd before pulling it back. Jericho orbiting that energy, Moxley and Punk each representing a different pressure point in the company’s internal drama: WrestleDream had the right ingredients at the right temperature.
What WrestleDream represents, looked at with four years of distance, is a promotion at something close to its creative ceiling β not perfect, but purposeful. The card meant something because the characters meant something, and that’s the standard against which everything else gets measured. Wrestling has always rewarded the shows that feel earned, and this was one of them.
