A report suggesting former WWE head writer Vince Russo held talks with WWE President Nick Khan about a possible return to the company has been circulating, but follow-up reporting indicates the conversations did not lead anywhere and caught much of WWE’s staff by surprise.
The story originated with podcast host Conrad Thompson, who wrote in a column that Russo “had a series of conversations with WWE President Nick Khan about a possible return to WWE” during the summer of 2026. Thompson’s report did not offer further detail beyond the existence of those talks.
Fightful Select subsequently confirmed that discussions between Russo and Khan had taken place, but added an important wrinkle: according to the outlet, nobody within WWE was even aware the meeting had occurred, which strongly suggests Russo returning to the company is not imminent.
That lack of internal awareness was echoed in a separate report from Wrestling News, which cited Fightful Select in stating that WWE agents, producers, writers and road staff had not heard anything about Russo’s talks with Khan until Thompson’s column became public. The report added that some influential names within the company reacted to the news by “laughing it off,” a reaction that points toward widespread internal skepticism about any real possibility of Russo rejoining WWE.
Adding another layer to the story, PWInsider reported that the version of events circulating inside WWE is that it was actually Russo who reached out to Khan about a potential role with the company, rather than WWE initiating contact. According to that report, whatever discussions did take place did not advance beyond that initial contact.
Taken together, the three reports paint a consistent picture: Russo and Khan did have some form of conversation over the summer of 2026 about a possible WWE return, but the talks appear to have stalled or gone nowhere, and they were conducted with so little internal visibility that much of WWE’s own creative and production staff learned of them only after the story broke publicly. Russo, who previously served as WWE’s head writer during the Attitude Era before later working for rival promotions including WCW and TNA, has not worked for WWE in a writing capacity for decades. None of the available reporting indicates any specific role, contract, or timeline attached to the discussions, and no WWE or Russo confirmation of further developments has been reported.
