Thirty years in this business and I still laugh at how fans need everything labeled “shoot” or “work” like it’s a tag on a milk carton. Kevin Owens gets bounced from the PC because CM Punk is walking through the door, and three different outlets scramble to report a scheduling conflict like it’s the Pentagon Papers. You know what that tells me? It’s working. That’s the only grade that matters.
Here’s the deal, and anybody who’s spent time around a locker room knows it: you do not let your two hottest acts bump into each other in a hallway before the segment airs. Doesn’t matter if the issue is real, worked, or forty percent each with a splash of shoot resentment mixed in β once the cameras roll on SmackDown, that confrontation needs to feel like it’s never happened before. Shawn Michaels didn’t get on that headset because he’s running a daycare. He’s protecting the novelty. That’s booking 101, the kind they used to teach you in territories before a guy ever touched a live mic. Keep your money players apart till fight night. Let the air build. Let the dirt sheets do your advertising for free. Three reports, same week, zero dollars spent β that’s a promoter’s dream.
Now, do I love that an actual hurt shoulder got shuffled around because of it? No. If Owens needed treatment, he should get treatment, full stop, I don’t care who’s walking through what hallway. That’s the one crack in this I’ll poke at β a guy’s body isn’t a prop in your go-home segment. Somebody in that building better make sure Kevin’s getting taken care of on a different clock, not left standing in a parking lot with a bad shoulder because the schedule says Punk’s PC time is sacred. That’s where the old-school part of me gets cranky. You protect the angle, fine β you don’t let it step on a guy’s actual health.
But the heat itself? The idea that these two can’t even share a building without it becoming a documented standoff? That’s the stuff that used to sell out arenas back when wrestlers actually hated each other and the promoter just pointed a camera at it. Whether Punk and Owens genuinely can’t stand each other or they’re both in on making you think that β I don’t need to know. I just need Friday night to feel like something’s about to go off. Right now it does.
Keep them apart. Keep us talking. That’s the whole racket, and for once this week, somebody backstage remembered how it’s supposed to work.
