That’s a man who’s been carrying the weight of a broken brotherhood for twelve years finally putting it down, one devastating lunge at a time, in front of a full house in Minneapolis. If you weren’t feeling something when that third one landed, I genuinely don’t know what you’re doing in these seats.
Now, I’ll be honest with you the way I always am: this match had no business being this good given how many times WWE has dragged the Roman-Seth well dry. These two have main evented so many premium live events over the years that the story should be deader than kayfabe. And yet. And yet. Give the workers their credit before you give the bookers anything — Reigns and Rollins went out there and made you forget you’d seen versions of this before, because the Shield thread tied it to something that actually mattered emotionally, not just contractually.
The tribute to Dean Ambrose — Jon Moxley, call him what you want, the point stands — is the part that’s going to get glossed over in the hot takes and I refuse to let that happen. That’s not window dressing. That’s Roman acknowledging the thing that made all three of them. The Shield wasn’t a faction, it was a foundation. Everything Roman Reigns became — the Head of the Table, the Tribal Chief, the Undisputed this and World that — it started when he walked through that crowd with those two guys flanking him. Paying that tribute in the main event of SummerSlam is the right move, and I don’t say that lightly.
Here’s my one gripe, and it’s not small: WWE sat on this match for years when it would’ve felt fresh. We’re doing Shield nostalgia in 2026 because the company needed a main event that could carry emotional weight without a full build. That’s lazy. That’s using the workers’ history as a crutch because the creative didn’t put in the miles.
But you know what? Sometimes the right match in the wrong context still delivers. Minneapolis got a main event worth talking about. Reigns walks out champion. Rollins looks like a warrior who simply got hit one spear too many.
The Shield gave WWE its best decade. The least the company could do is close a SummerSlam worthy of the name.
They did. Barely. But they did.
