On This Day in 2004: Muhammad Hassan debuts on Raw and divides opinion from the start

Twenty-two years ago, WWE introduced Muhammad Hassan to a Raw audience and immediately dared you to have a clean reaction to it. The character — an Arab-American furious at post-9/11 discrimination — was rooted in something real, something that American television was almost entirely unwilling to touch. Hassan and his mouthpiece Daivari walked out with a legitimate grievance and a legitimate heel framing, which put the crowd in an uncomfortable position that good wrestling rarely bothers to create anymore. Lawler, predictably, gave the angle exactly the kind of blinkered opposition that made Hassan’s argument land harder than WWE probably intended.

The problem was never Marc Copani’s work between the ropes. Hassan was polished, composed, and carried himself with a credibility that most debuting talents spend years trying to manufacture. The issue was always going to be whether WWE had the discipline and the responsibility to shepherd a character this combustible through to something meaningful, or whether they’d eventually reach for the easiest, ugliest version of it. The Ruthless Aggression era had a genuine appetite for Edge, but edge and recklessness are not the same thing, and the company would eventually prove it couldn’t tell the difference. What debuted on this night had potential that the creative infrastructure around it was never equipped to honour.

That gap — between a genuinely provocative idea and the institutional nerve required to execute it properly — is one wrestling has never fully closed. Hassan’s debut belongs to a short, uncomfortable list of moments where the industry stumbled onto something culturally significant and then fumbled it in ways that caused real harm, not just bad television. It’s worth remembering what the first night looked like, before everything that followed, because the debut itself was sharp enough to deserve better than the story it ended up inside.
