Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles have their brutal final chapter at Hell in a Cell
Eight years ago, two of the best wrestlers alive walked into Hell in a Cell carrying a feud that had been simmering with genuine venom β not the manufactured kind, but the kind that comes from two veterans who understand exactly how to make professional wrestling feel like a real conflict. Samoa Joe and AJ Styles had spent months building something that the WWE machine doesn’t always trust itself to let breathe, and the Cell gave it the brutal punctuation it deserved. They bled. They stretched each other. It became a submission war in the most honest sense β not a sequence of transitional holds, but two men genuinely trying to break one another.
What makes this match worth revisiting β and worth being angry that it doesn’t get more reverence β is the specificity of what Joe and Styles brought to it. Joe’s whole identity is the credible threat, the guy who makes you believe a choke is a choke and not choreography. Styles, for his part, had been operating at a level of in-ring consistency during this period that almost defied the grind of the WWE schedule. Together, inside that structure, they produced something that belonged in a different era’s highlight reel β the kind of match that gets called a hidden gem precisely because the industry moved past it too quickly.
The tragedy of this feud, and this match in particular, is how cleanly it illustrates what gets lost in the volume of WWE’s output. Great matches don’t always survive the calendar. When the next pay-per-view is already being marketed before the blood dries on this one, even genuine excellence gets buried under the avalanche of what’s next β and that’s a structural problem that has always cost professional wrestling more than any individual bad booking decision ever could.
