John Cena announced on NXT this week that Zilla Fatu has become the second wrestler invited to the John Cena Classic, and the first competitor from NXT to receive an invitation to the event. The announcement came directly from Cena during the broadcast, putting Fatu in the spotlight as WWE continues to build out the roster for the new showcase.
Following the announcement, Fatu used his vlog to reveal details about the invitation itself, showing off special commemorative gifts given to those asked to take part in the Classic. According to Fightful, Fatu displayed two coins featuring sayings and mantras associated with Cena, underscoring the personalized nature of the invitations being handed out as the event takes shape.
The John Cena Classic is tied to a broader expansion of WWE’s relationship with The Walt Disney Company, which also owns ESPN. As PWMania reported, WWE and Disney recently announced an expanded partnership that includes a special two-day event at the Wide World of Sports Complex inside Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. That event will feature both the John Cena Classic and an Avengers: Doomsday-themed edition of Worlds Collide, with the latter scheduled for a Monday date as part of the two-day slate.
Fatu’s invitation marks a notable moment for NXT, giving the brand its first confirmed representative in the Classic field. With Cena personally delivering the announcement on NXT programming, the move signals that WWE intends to pull talent for the event from across its developmental and main roster pipelines rather than limiting it to established main roster stars alone.
Details on the full format of the John Cena Classic, additional invitees, and the complete schedule for the Orlando event have not been outlined in the reporting so far. WWE has not released further specifics beyond the confirmation of Fatu’s spot and the event’s placement within the Disney partnership and Worlds Collide crossover weekend.
