Sami Zayn Explains the Gradual Heel Turn He’s Been Building Since Royal Rumble

Sami Zayn says his slow shift away from fan-favorite status started with his Royal Rumble loss to Drew McIntyre and accelerated through his feuds with Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams.

Sami Zayn has detailed how his heel turn was not a single decision but a gradual evolution that began with his Royal Rumble loss to Drew McIntyre earlier this year. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on the Insight Podcast, Zayn explained that the shift in his character has been a deliberate, months-long process rather than an overnight creative pivot.

According to Zayn, 2026 started with him cast as the underdog babyface chasing his first WWE Championship. That pursuit ended in defeat at Royal Rumble when Drew McIntyre beat him for the title. Zayn said that loss marked the beginning of his character’s descent, as the version of Sami Zayn that fans had embraced for years had, in his words, run its course.

From there, Zayn’s trajectory shifted when he defeated Carmelo Hayes to capture the WWE United States Championship. That title win led directly into a feud with Trick Williams, a program that Zayn says further pushed his character away from the clean-cut babyface persona and toward the more ambiguous, edgier presentation he has been building toward since.

Zayn described the turn in specific terms, telling Van Vliet he is working toward a particular cheer-to-boo ratio from crowds rather than aiming for a full, unambiguous heel reaction. That approach reflects a slower, more calculated turn designed to let fan reaction organically catch up to the character shift, rather than forcing an immediate split from the audience that made him one of WWE’s most popular performers in recent years.

In the same conversation, Zayn also looked back on his time aligned with Roman Reigns and The Bloodline in 2022, describing how that alliance evolved in ways that diverged from WWE’s initial plans for the storyline. He credited the creative team’s willingness to adapt the angle as it unfolded, calling the arc filled with absurdity but ultimately shaped by the ability to pivot as the story developed organically.

Zayn’s comments tie together a throughline in his 2026 booking: a failed title opportunity against Drew McIntyre, a championship win over Carmelo Hayes, and a subsequent feud with Trick Williams, all of which he frames as connected steps in a single, ongoing character transformation rather than isolated storylines. He did not detail specific future plans for the character beyond the cheer-boo balance he says he is chasing.
