D-Generation X reunites and runs wild over the McMahon family
Twenty years ago, WWE stumbled onto something it hadn’t truly had in years: a comedy act that actually worked. The DX reunion of 2006 wasn’t built on nostalgia alone β it was built on the specific, gleeful chemistry between Shawn Michaels and Triple H, two performers who understood instinctively that the best way to make Vince and Shane McMahon look ridiculous was to commit fully to the absurdity themselves. The invasion segments targeting the McMahon family weren’t great television in spite of being silly β they were great television because everyone involved leaned into the silliness without blinking.
What made it land was the target. Vince McMahon has always been at his most entertaining when the audience is in on the joke of his own ego, and DX in 2006 weaponized that understanding brilliantly. The McMahons β Vince and Shane both β proved willing to be the straight men to HBK and HHH’s chaos, which required a kind of institutional self-awareness that WWE doesn’t always demonstrate. The result was some of the most genuinely fun WWE television of that entire year, a period when the product was otherwise grinding through one of its more creatively stagnant stretches.
The reunion also serves as a useful reminder that wrestling’s version of a nostalgia act doesn’t have to be purely backward-looking to justify itself β DX in 2006 felt present-tense because it had a live antagonist worth tormenting and two performers sharp enough to make the material sing. That’s the real lesson here: reunions work when there’s a reason beyond the reunion itself, when the returning act has something to do rather than simply something to be. The best acts in this business have always understood the difference.
