Will Ospreay Wants Clockwork Carnage to Become a Yearly AEW Tradition After WrestleDream Win

The AEW World Champion says he is "proud" of introducing the multi-man Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream 2026 and hopes it becomes an annual fixture.

Will Ospreay successfully defended the AEW World Championship in the promotion’s first-ever Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream 2026, and the champion now says he would like to see the concept return as a yearly tradition on AEW’s calendar.

According to Bodyslam, Ospreay retained his title in a multi-man contest that also featured Adam Copeland, Darby Allin, Kazuchika Okada, Konosuke Takeshita, Mike Bailey, Ricochet, and Samoa Joe. The gauntlet-style structure, built around escalating entrants and elimination stakes, marked a new match type for AEW’s biggest annual stages.

Per Fightful, Ospreay was the one who originally pitched the idea for the Clockwork Carnage format, pushing the company to try something it had never run before rather than relying on an established stipulation. Reflecting on the match afterward on social media, Ospreay said he was proud of “daring to try something new” by bringing the concept to life at WrestleDream.

Ospreay’s comments, relayed by Bodyslam, indicate he hopes Clockwork Carnage does not remain a one-off novelty but instead becomes a recurring attraction tied to AEW’s calendar, similar to how other promotions build signature gimmick matches around specific annual events. Given that Ospreay conceived the match and successfully defended his title inside it, his advocacy for its return carries added weight with AEW’s creative direction heading toward future major shows.

The field assembled for the inaugural edition underscored how significant AEW considered the experiment. Pairing a seven-man roster that included former world champions in Adam Copeland, Kazuchika Okada, and Samoa Joe, alongside rising stars in Konosuke Takeshita and Mike Bailey, plus veterans Darby Allin and Ricochet, placed real championship stakes behind the new format rather than treating it as an exhibition.

With the AEW World Championship still around Ospreay’s waist following WrestleDream, his victory in the match’s debut outing adds another high-profile defense to his reign. Whether AEW moves forward with Ospreay’s suggestion to make Clockwork Carnage an annual match remains to be seen, but his public endorsement signals he would welcome stepping into the format again in future editions of WrestleDream or other major shows.
