AJ Styles says his lone regret about facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 36 is that the two never got to work each other earlier in their careers, according to comments Styles made during a recent interview with Sporf.
Styles and The Undertaker met in a cinematic Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36 in 2020, a bout necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the original live event and forcing WWE to reimagine much of that year’s WrestleMania card. The match went down as The Undertaker’s final match in WWE.
According to Fightful and F4W Online, Styles revisited the match in his conversation with Sporf and said he is content with how the Boneyard Match turned out but still wishes the two had crossed paths sooner. Wrestling Headlines reported that Styles called the circumstances surrounding the match “definitely different,” pointing to the pandemic as the reason the encounter took the shape it did rather than a traditional in-ring bout.
Because of the pandemic-related restrictions in place in 2020, WWE produced the match on a pre-taped, cinematic basis away from a live arena crowd, a format that became one of the more memorable elements of that year’s WrestleMania. The bout has since been remembered both for its production style and for marking the final time The Undertaker competed under the WWE banner.
Styles’ comments add a personal reflection to a match already regarded as a landmark moment in The Undertaker’s career, with the multi-time WWE veteran expressing appreciation for the opportunity while acknowledging he would have preferred an earlier meeting between the two.
