Will Ospreay has accepted a challenge from Callum Newman to meet him in singles competition at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 21, confirming the match after weeks of simmering tension between the two United Empire stablemates finally erupted into a post-match brawl.

The sequence of events began at NJPW Power Struggle on Tuesday, November 3, in Hiroshima, Japan, where Ospreay and Newman teamed up in an attempt to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship from the Knockout Brothers, Yuto-Ice and OSKAR. The challenge came up short, and in dramatic fashion, as the United Empire pairing was disqualified after Newman became involved in the finish. The disqualification loss appears to have been the breaking point for the strained relationship between the two, as a brawl broke out between them once the match ended.

In the aftermath, Newman issued a direct, official challenge to Ospreay for a singles match at Wrestle Kingdom 21, NJPW’s flagship Tokyo Dome event. Ospreay has now accepted that challenge, setting up a confrontation between two men who have shared a locker room and tag team success as part of United Empire but whose personal issues have reportedly been building for some time, coming to a head in Hiroshima.

Alongside accepting the match, Ospreay issued a statement addressing the broader future of United Empire as a faction, according to reports from F4W Online and TPWW. Ospreay, who continues to compete for AEW while also working select NJPW dates, reportedly went further by making what Wrestling Inc described as a “public request” to the rest of the United Empire roster ahead of the Wrestle Kingdom 21 match, though the specific content of that request was not detailed beyond the fact it was directed at his stablemates in the wake of the Newman fallout.

The internal strife places United Empire’s long-term cohesion in question heading into Wrestle Kingdom 21, one of NJPW’s marquee shows of the year. With the failed tag title challenge serving as the catalyst and a direct personal confrontation now on the books between Ospreay and Newman, the match carries real stakes for a faction that has been a fixture of NJPW’s upper card. No further details on the stipulation, card position, or additional matches for the show have been confirmed at this time.
