You get a nice suit, a desk, a scripted reason to be on television every week, and then one day you look up and the crowd has completely forgotten you ever laced a boot. It happened to Teddy Long. It happened to Vickie Guerrero when they stripped the heat away. It very nearly happened to Mick Foley twice. The office kills the mystique. That is the rule.
Nick Aldis was about eighteen months from becoming wallpaper.
And then GUNTHER, bless his Austrian heart, stormed a stage at Fanatics Fest and handed the man a lifeline with both hands.
Here is what I want you to appreciate about what just happened. Triple H did not drag Aldis back into a ring because someone in creative suddenly remembered he’s a four-time NWA Champion with legitimate old-school credibility. He’s back in the ring because GUNTHER needed a credible body to work with and the feud has organically built to a point where *not* doing this would be the stupid option. That is good television producing a natural result. I am not going to pretend it is some genius long-term plan, because I have been around long enough to know it probably wasn’t. But I will absolutely credit it when a program finds its own heat and drags the company along with it.
GUNTHER is arguably the best thing WWE has going on SmackDown right now, and that is a loaded roster. The man makes everything feel like a genuine confrontation. He complained about the title situation, had a physical incident at a kickoff press event, and still came across as the most serious person in the building. You cannot teach that.
The question now is whether Aldis actually belongs in there with him at SummerSlam.
And honestly? My gut says yes. Not because Aldis is going to outwork him — nobody on that roster outworks GUNTHER in a big match setting right now. But Aldis is old school in the right way. He understands positioning, he understands how to make something mean something, and he has spent two years watching every match on that brand from the best seat in the house. The ring rust is real. The instincts probably aren’t gone.
Book this right — proper build, let GUNTHER be the monster, let Aldis be the man who finally has to put his dignity where his authority is — and you’ve got a SummerSlam moment that actually lands.
