John Cena Responds to Criticism That WWE Is “Wasting” GUNTHER

John Cena has acknowledged the growing fan sentiment that WWE is not making the most of GUNTHER following their encounter at Saturday Night’s Main Event, admitting the criticism may have merit even if he does not see the full picture behind the scenes.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio while promoting his upcoming film Matchbox: The Movie, Cena directly addressed the claims surrounding GUNTHER’s direction on WWE programming. “I know there’s sentiment out there that, ‘man, they’re wasting GUNTHER!’ Maybe currently they are,” Cena said, according to Fightful. He added that while he understands the frustration, he does not have insight into WWE’s broader creative plans, saying he does not “see the view from the penthouse,” as reported by NoDQ.

The comments come as WWE approaches the one-year anniversary of Cena’s retirement match, a Saturday Night’s Main Event special built around his farewell in which he tapped out to GUNTHER. That loss remains Cena’s final match, and fan debate has persisted since then over how WWE has used GUNTHER on television in the time since.

During the same Busted Open appearance, Cena also offered thoughts on CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, telling the hosts he believes both are “putting pressure on themselves that they don’t need.” According to Fightful, Cena specifically referenced CM Punk’s preoccupation with certain goals as an example of the kind of self-imposed pressure he was describing, though he did not detail what that pressure stems from beyond the broader point about top talent driving themselves hard.

Cena’s remarks reflect a veteran perspective on how top-tier performers, including GUNTHER, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, navigate expectations within WWE, though he stopped short of offering any specific prediction or confirmation about upcoming creative direction for any of the three.
