Sami Zayn wins his first major singles title at Payback in Pittsburgh
Three years ago in Pittsburgh, Sami Zayn won the Intercontinental Championship at Payback, and it meant something in a way that very few title changes do anymore. This wasn’t a coronation that needed explaining or selling β the crowd understood exactly what they were watching. The Bloodline arc had spent the better part of a year turning Zayn into one of the most compelling characters in WWE, a man who’d wandered into a crime family by accident and survived on sheer likability, and by the time he got his hands on that title, the audience was ready to detonate.
What makes this moment worth sitting with is how rare it actually is β a babyface title win that felt genuinely earned rather than editorially mandated. Shinsuke Nakamura, Seth Rollins, and Jey Uso were all in the mix, which meant the match carried real weight on paper and real unpredictability in the room. That kind of card construction, where multiple outcomes feel plausible, is harder to pull off than it looks, and WWE got it right here. Zayn winning didn’t feel like a consolation prize or a soft reward β it felt like the right person winning at exactly the right time, which is almost embarrassingly rare.
The Intercontinental title has historically functioned as wrestling’s proving ground β the place where guys demonstrate they can carry something, not just chase it. Zayn winning it here wasn’t just the end of a story arc; it was a statement that he’d crossed over from beloved underdog into legitimate main event currency. That’s the kind of moment the business runs on when it’s working the way it should.
