Tommaso Ciampa will challenge Andrade El Idolo for the AEW National Championship at AEW WrestleDream, with the match made official during the go-home edition of Dynamite this week. The announcement followed a tag team bout in which Ciampa and Samoa Joe defeated the pairing of Andrade El Idolo and Will Ospreay.
According to Fightful, the title match was confirmed on this week’s episode of AEW Collision after the Ciampa and Joe victory over Andrade and Ospreay. F4W Online added further detail on how the announcement came together, reporting that the match had been teased for several weeks and was made official on the go-home edition of Dynamite after Ciampa used the championship belt against Andrade during the tag team contest that also featured Ospreay.
The build suggests a physical edge has already developed between the two men heading into their title encounter. Ciampa using the National Championship belt itself against the man who currently holds it, during a match that doubled as a preview of the singles rivalry to come, points to genuine animosity rather than a routine challenger announcement. Joe’s involvement alongside Ciampa, and Ospreay’s alongside Andrade, also places two of AEW’s most prominent singles and tag performers directly in each other’s orbit heading into the pay-per-view.
For Andrade El Idolo, the match represents a significant defense of the AEW National Championship against a decorated former NXT Champion in Ciampa, who has built a reputation across multiple promotions for hard-hitting, physical title matches. A loss would end Andrade’s reign, while a successful defense would further cement his championship as a focal point of AEW’s midcard scene heading into the next stretch of programming.
Neither source detailed the full card for WrestleDream beyond this addition, though F4W Online noted that a TBS Championship match was also among the new additions revealed on the same go-home Dynamite broadcast. As AEW continues to build out the WrestleDream lineup, the National Championship match adds another marquee singles bout to a card that has already drawn attention for its tag team build.
